Mel Bartholomew – Introducing Square Foot Gardening

22

Square Foot Gardening (SFG) is a great way to convert that boring suburbia grass lawn into a sustainable produce isle. Don’t have a lawn? That’s cool- SFG can be done practically anywhere. Mel was kind enough to send me this DVD which gives a quick intro into SFG. This method is great for the absolute beginner who might be a little overwhelmed by starting that first organic garden. For more information, including including Mel’s popular book & instructional DVDs, check out: www.squarefootgardening.com

A garden in the Carmel Highlands

We’re getting ready for the 2008 Annual General Meeting of The Mediterranean Garden Society, which is being hosted by our own Northern California Branch (this is an international society) in Monterey, October 9-12, 2008. Our committee has the delightful task of visiting various gardens in order to choose which will be showcased for this event. We’re looking for great design, including climate appropriateness and resource frugality. Fortunate for us, we have a team of wonderful designers from the Monterey area who know just where to look for such gardens.

This is a 4-day member-only event (you are welcome to join!) but there is also a 1-day symposium (Oct 11, 2008) that is open to the public (more information).

Vertical Garden

another interesting "Vertical Garden" at the SF Flower and Garden Show – this one in the Smith & Hawken booth. Although they are very appealing and a good use of space in a small garden, I’m quite sure I could kill off every living thing in record time!

This is a trend that I had totally missed out on – apparently it’s quite popular in Europe. And the kits are "sold out" at Smith & Hawken so I don’t even know how much they cost…

While driving the famous "road to Hana" in Maui, we stopped to visit the "Garden of Eden" – also called the Maui Botanical Flower Gardens. I shot this photo on slide film and later digitized it.

An Eggcellent View of Topiary at Great Comp Garden!

Set in the heart of the Garden of England and surrounding a 17th century house, Great Comp Garden is the delightful creation of Roderick and Joy Cameron since moving to Great Comp in 1957. The gardens are now run by the Curator William Dyson, assisted by one full time gardener, 2 part time gardeners and a small team of volunteers.

Surrounding an early 17th Century Manor The garden extends to 7 acres, with many beautiful and rare shrubs, perennials and other hardy and half hardy plants. This remarkable Kent Garden is a veritable plantsman’s paradise. The year begins with Snowflakes & Helleborus, followed by Magnolias, Azaleas and Rhododendrons.

Summer brings a wealth of colourful, rare & exotic shrubs & perennials, especially Salvias; These unusual and long flowering plants are particularly well represented at Great Comp with their display extending between May & October.

Majorelle Garden, founded by the French painter Jacques Majorelle in 1923. His studio built in 1931 houses a small Museum of Islamic Arts.
The garden is a green (blue and yellow) oasis in the new town of Marrakech and has groves of palms, bamboo, agave, a cactus garden and a couple of ponds.
Before his death (2008) Majorelle Garden was owned by Yves Saint Laurent.

Shanghai – YuYuan Garden (1)

Klick here for a large view!

Yuyuan Garden, located in the center of the Old City next to the Chenghuangmiao in Shanghai, China, is considered one of the most lavish and finest Chinese gardens in the region.

The garden was reportedly first established in 1559 as a private garden created by Pan Yunduan, who spent almost 20 years building a garden to please his father Pan En, a high-ranking official in the Ming Dynasty, during his father’s old age. Over the years, the gardens fell into disrepair until about 1760 when bought by merchants, then suffered extensive damage in the 19th century. In 1842, during the Opium Wars, the British army occupied the Town God Temple for five days. During the Taiping Rebellion the gardens were occupied by imperial troops, and damaged again by the Japanese in 1942. They were repaired by the Shanghai government from 1956-1961, opened to the public in 1961, and declared a national monument in 1982.

A week ago we visited this well known Southern resort. Saturday was perfect – 70 degrees, a slight breeze, with the air full of birdsong. Sunday was wet and cloudy with bands of showers, This shot was taken Saturday afternoon in a corner of the demonstration vegetable garden that served as the site of the Victory Garden South on the long running American Public Television Series.

Today I am putting up the rest of the shots. If you click on the set at the right and run the slideshow in full screen mode, you can get a "tour", although the shots that I took on Sunday are in pretty damp, gloomy conditions. Here is a link to the official site for the gardens:
