Dotted Border, Agriopis marginaria.

I put the trap out last night, desperate to see a moth again! The night was clear and chilly and there was nothing in or near the trap by midnight. Just as I sighed and gave up, I spotted this moth on the kitchen window. First moth of the year and a new record for the garden. I now feel slightly less desperate to see a moth!

Garden lights, snow flakes, and a street lamp

Garden lights, falling snow, and a street lamp.

I used a combination of a long exposure, zoom, flash, and manual focus to narrow the depth of field and make the light from the garden, snowflakes, and street lamp appear as circles.

The full scene is my backyard as it appears here:

Lyrics (words & music by ca miles) I come to the garden alone While the dew is still on the roses And the voice I hear falling on my ear The song of God discloses And he walks with me And he talks with me And he tells me I am his own And the joy we share as we tarry there None other has ever known He speaks and the sound of his voice Is so sweet the birds hush their singing And the melody that he gave to me Within my heart is ringing And he walks with me And he talks with me And he tells me I am his own And the joy we share as we tarry there None other has ever known

Leafing Through Autumn at Sheffield Park & Garden
the garden

This magnificent informal landscape garden was laid out in the 18th century by ‘Capability’ Brown and further developed in the early years of the 20th century by its owner, Arthur G. Soames. The original four lakes form the centrepiece. There are dramatic shows of daffodils and bluebells in spring, and the rhododendrons and azaleas are spectacular in early summer. Autumn brings stunning colours from the many rare trees and shrubs, and winter walks can be enjoyed in this garden for all seasons. Visitors can now also explore South Park, 107 hectares (265 acres) of historic parkland, with stunning views.

Diana of the Tower

Diana of the Tower is a variation of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’s famous weathervane of the Roman goddess of the hunt that stood atop the Madison Square Garden Tower in New York City from 1894 until the Garden was demolished in 1925. Despite the weathervane’s placement high above the city, the figure’s nudity disturbed some viewers. Reporters fueled debates about the sculpture’s propriety. "Occasionally a stray child may still be seen [in the area of Madison Square Park]," one wrote, "but more generally, what children come there are rushed through at breakneak speed in the two of a nurse of some older person. In their place the Square is now thronged with clubmen, armed with filed glasses." Nevertheless, Diana’s popularity was great enough to inspire the sculptor to create several editions of reduced versions such as this one, the sales and exhibitions of which established Diana as on of the best-known American sculptures of the period.
